“In-step” with the Milton High School Band

Published on September 05, 2012 with No Comments

There have been numerous reports that drums and strange sounds can be heard echoing through the neighborhoods in the city of Milton. No, it isn’t tribal drums from the natives of Milton, it is the sound of the Milton HS Mighty Black & Gold Band hard at work making preparations for their upcoming marching season. The MHS Band began with Rookie Camp in June where they welcomed 65 new members to the group! Then they had numerous rehearsals and a two-week band camp in July as the 160-member group began putting together their halftime show, “Live in Concert!”. The show features the music of Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, the Eagles, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Guns & Roses, and Bon Jovi.

You can catch their performances at all MHS Varsity Football Games and at three different marching competitions in October. The MHS Band is planning to participate in the Southeast US Marching Band Festival at Troy University on October 6, the Florida Bandmasters Association District 1 Marching Music Performance Assessment at Ft. Walton Beach High School on October13, and the Southland Band Classic on October 27.

Aside from the hard work, the band has also enjoyed some fun activities. One of these events was the Band Lock-In/Lock-Out that took place on July 20-21. During this event, the students enjoyed relay races in the gym before heading out to CiCi’s Pizza for a late night buffet. After eating, the band enjoyed a movie at Silver Screen Theatre and then bowling at Oops Alley. They returned back to Milton HS for the annual sunrise kickball tournament followed by breakfast before heading home around 7:30 am to catch some sleep. This was a great way to kick off our band camp!

The group traveled the following weekend to enjoy Drum Corps International’s Southeast Regional at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. We enjoyed all of the World Class Drum & Bugle Corps and cheered for some of our former members as they competed. The Milton HS Band also traveled to Tallahassee on Saturday, Sept. 8 to participate in the Florida State University Marching Chiefs Band Day…which concluded with attending the FSU vs Savannah State football game. We currently have three alumni members marching in the FSU Band.

Be sure to get out this year to hear one of the hardest working groups on the Milton HS Campus — the MHS Mighty Black & Gold Marching Band!
