Santa Rosa Medical Center this week announced the opening of its Santa Rosa Sleep Disorders Center, under the direction of Asser El-Atfy, M.D.

Dr. El-Atfy is board certified in pulmonary medicine, critical care and sleep medicine.

The Santa Rosa Sleep Disorders Center is located on the Santa Rosa Medical Center campus in the Medical Office Building at 5992 Berryhill Road, Suite 204 in Milton, and is equipped for the diagnosis of sleep disorders in a safe, comfortable, hotel-like setting.

“According to the National Sleep Foundation, approximately 70 million people in the United States are affected by a sleep disorder.  Whether the problems are chronic or intermittent, the overwhelming majority of sleep disorders remain undiagnosed and untreated.  We are proud to offer our new facility to Santa Rosans, so they have a place to come to address their sleep problems,” said Santa Rosa Medical Center CEO Phillip Wright.

Symptoms of a sleep disorder include snoring, daytime sleepiness, choking or gasping during sleep, morning headaches and pauses in breathing during sleep.   Those with a history of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, weight gain or obesity, and morning headaches are at a higher risk for having or developing a sleep disorder.  Left untreated, patients are at a greater risk for stroke and heart disease.  Recent studies have shown that those who sleep more weigh less.

Treatment begins with a referral from your physician for a sleep study.

Polysomnography (sleep study) measures several channels of information including respiratory rate, oxygen level, brain waves and leg movements.

Results are reviewed by Dr. El-Atfy, and reports are provided back to the referring physician.
