Sailors Wear New Ranks

Naval Air Station (NAS) Whiting Field recognized the achievements of soon-to-be-advanced Sailors during a frocking ceremony Friday, May 31.  More than 20 Sailors were all smiles as they were able to wear the new collar devices for the first time.

The frocking ceremony is a Navy tradition that provides the selected Sailors an opportunity to wear the uniform and take on the responsibilities of their new rank before they are formally advanced.  Second Class Petty Officers were frocked to First Class, Third Class Petty Officers were frocked to Second Class and Airmen were frocked to Third Class.

Each Sailor received a frocking letter from Capt. Matthew Coughlin, NAS Whiting Field commanding officer, which reads in part, “Your appointment carries with it the obligation that you exercise increased authority and willingly accept greater responsibility.  Occupying now a position of greater authority, you must strive with a renewed dedication toward the valued ideal of service with honor.”

Sailors from NAS Whiting Field selected for advancement including:  Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Fernando Diaz, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Edwars Forbes, Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Mark Grenda, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Christopher Jacobs, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Kyle Krause, Master-at-Arms 1st Class Erica Roten, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Eric Aning, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Kevin Beckford, Air Traffic Controller 2nd Class Lauren Haavisto, Air Traffic Controller 2nd Class Justin Morgan, Air Traffic Controller 2nd Class Keesha Page, Air Traffic Controller 2nd Class Erin Pitts, Air Traffic Controller 2nd Class James Scott, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Bernard Ugalde, Air Traffic Controller 3rd Class Logan Hays, Air Traffic Controller 3rd Class David Knight, Air Traffic Controller 3rd Class Jeremy Merki, Air Traffic Controller 3rd Class Preston Miller, Air Traffic Controller 3rd Class Christina Ramirez, Information Systems Technician 3rd Class Joseph Smith, Air Traffic Controller 3rd Class Takiyah Watson, and Air Traffic Controller 3rd Class Darren Williams.

“This is an august group of Sailors who have worked hard to get to this point, and they should be very proud of their accomplishments,” Coughlin stated to the family and shipmates in attendance.  “It is difficult to stay in today’s Navy, and there are a lot of phenomenal Sailors who didn’t get promoted today.  Keep fighting to get there.  I want to see you all on this stage someday.”
