Basketball season gets underway at community center

The City of Milton’s recreational basketball league has set several first prior to Friday’s tipoff.

One major accomplishment is the registration of over 200 young men and women to play this season, while the second is the first ever girls league.

As the season gets underway 29 teams will be competiting with eight of those teams being girls only squads.

The girls only division were broken down to grades 2 through 4 and grades 5 through 8.

Despite the addition of the girls league for the first time, there will still be some co-ed basketball as the kindergarten through second grade division will still feature girls on the teams.

“We are excited about the upcoming season,” said Robert Arnold, the Recreation and Activities Coordinator with the City of Milton Parks and Recreation Department. “We have a great program developing with the City of Milton and are looking to build on what was started last year.

“This year we were able to add an all girls league due to the large number of girls who registered and showed an interest in basketball compared to previous years. Because of this we are even more excited about what the season has in store.”

Games will be played on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings along with a slate of games scheduled each Saturday.

Prior to the start of the season the players went through a draft process in an effort to allow an even level of competition throughout the league.

Practices for the season began the week of Dec. 16, and all games will be played at the Milton Community Center.
