Here are some activities offered by area libraries in the Santa Rosa County Library System.

National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  Bullying is a problem in schools, the workplace, public venues and online.  The Santa Rosa County Library System, along with communities across the United States, is observing National Bullying Prevention Month to raise awareness and prevent bullying in our community.  Stop by any of the five Santa Rosa County Libraries and sign a pledge to stand up against bullying.  Be a buddy, not a bully.

Story Time @ your library®

Story time for 3 to 5-year-olds who are able to attend without a caregiver will be held during the following times from Sept. 22 through Dec. 12:

  • 11 on Mondays at the Jay Library
  • 11:15 on Wednesdays at the Milton Library
  • 11 on Fridays at the Pace Library

In consideration of all participants, programs will start promptly at the assigned times.

Genealogy Research Assistance @ your library® – Milton Library Mondays 9 a.m. – noon, Tuesdays, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.

On Mondays from 9 a.m. – noon, Tuesdays from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., library volunteers are available at the Milton Library located at 5541 Alabama St., to give general genealogy research guidance; one-on-one assistance in using online and print genealogy resources for family researchers; and assistance in filling out ancestral charts and family group records. Beginners and seasoned researchers are invited to use these services. To ensure a volunteer is available to assist you, please call before you visit.

Using Directories in Genealogy Research @ your library® – Milton Library Oct. 7, 5:30 p.m.

Locating a person in a particular place and time is one important objective of genealogical research. Finding people between census years can be a challenge. Directories can sometimes help fill in those gaps. This program will present the genealogical information available in directories as well as the value of using them in conjunction with other genealogy records. Following the presentation, research assistants will assist participants who would like help, and participants may use computers for genealogy research.  This program will be presented at the Milton Library, 5541 Alabama Street in Milton. Participation is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Brown Bag Supper and Family Movie Night @ your library® – Jay Library Oct. 7, 6 p.m.

Surf over to the Jay Library to enjoy Family Movie Night.  Read the book or watch the movie and you’ll learn that when you come back from a loss, beat the odds and never say never, you find a champion.  Bring a bag supper to enjoy with the movie, but keep it away from the hungry jaws of the sharks.  The event is free and open to the public.  The Jay Library is located at 5259 Booker Lane in Jay. In consideration of all participants, program will start promptly at the assigned time.

Youth Chess Club @ your library® – Pace Library Oct. 1 and 15, 4 – 6 p.m.

The Youth Chess Club will meet the first and third Wednesday each month from 4 – 6 p.m. We provide a fun atmosphere for kids ages 10 – 17 to learn the history and strategies of the game of chess. Players will be matched based on age and skill level. All equipment will be provided. Registration is not required. Please contact the Pace Library for more information. The Pace Library is located at 4750 Pace Patriot Blvd. in Pace.

Friends of the Milton Library Book Sale – Oct. 10 & 11

Shop for bargain books of all types and subjects, for all ages. Santa Rosa County Library Friends groups regularly hold book sales to raise funds for Santa Rosa libraries – providing supplemental resources for library programs and activities and support for youth programs and special events throughout the year. Please support your library with these great bargains!  While you’re shopping, consider becoming a member of the Friends group.  See any member for details.  The book sale will be held at the Milton Library located at 5541 Alabama St. in Milton

Reading Education Assistance Dogs @ your library® – Pace Library Oct. 11, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Come, Sit, Stay & R.E.A.D. with a furry friend in the Pace Library Oct. 11, from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Registration is required. The program is held on the second Saturday of each month at the Pace Library located at 4750 Pace Patriot Blvd. in Pace. Contact the Pace Library for more information or to sign up.

Teen Read Week @ your library® – Oct. 12 – 18

Teen Read Week is a national initiative of the American Library Association focused on encouraging teens to read for fun.  Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce. Reading is free, fun and can be done anywhere! Visit your local library and follow this year’s theme — Turn Dreams Into Reality.

Brown Bag Supper and Movie @ your library® – Milton Library Oct. 14, 5:30 p.m.

Bring your supper and enjoy a family movie at the Milton Library. It’s an adventure that will have you flying high as you learn that sometimes life’s biggest adventures aren’t the ones you set out looking for.  The Milton Library is located at 5541 Alabama St. in Milton.  This program is free and open to the public.  Registration is not required. Contact the Milton Library for additional information.

Chess Tournament @ your library® – Pace Library Oct. 29, 4 – 6 p.m.

The Pace Library is hosting its first Chess Tournament for youth ages 10 – 17, Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 4 – 6 p.m.  The tournament is open to the first 25 players who sign up.  Register in person at the Pace Library or by calling (850) 981-READ (7323).  Registration is required. The Pace Library is located at 4750 Pace Patriot Blvd. in Pace.

Fall Into Fun @ your library® – Oct. 31, 3:30 – 5 p.m.

Visit any of the five Santa Rosa County Libraries located in Gulf Breeze, Jay, Milton, Navarre and Pace from 3:30 – 5 p.m.  Wear your favorite costume and enjoy a story and activities for preschool – 5th grade. As part of the festivities, the Navarre Library will host a special showing of a Halloween movie.  Stop by the Milton Library and guess how long it takes for the witch to melt.  For additional information, visit the library website at www.santarosa.fl.gov/libraries or call (850) 981-7323 (READ).
