The Purple Tulip, a family business with a focus on service

When Katherine Dalgleish and her sister Monika Atkinson opened The Purple Tulip in 2010 they were young and wanted to do more with their lives.
Dalgleish said they saw an opportunity to move into the store and begin their mother’s lifetime dream, to own a florist shop. It was a great chance to bring joy and beauty to people’s lives, she said.

“My mom had a special event business but she said she’d always wanted to be a florist. So Monika and I decided to do it since the other florist shop working out of this building was closing,” said Dalgleish. “I was 21 years old and Monika was 25. Monika married and has moved so it’s just me now and mom enjoys helping,” she said.

The Purple Tulip is a full service florist with gifts and wreaths, custom arrangements for all occasions, delivery service, services for special events like weddings and party flowers, all in a convenient location.

The Purple Tulip sits across from Milton High School on Stewart Street in Milton. Dalgleish said she loves her location and is happy with the city’s growth and beautification project, improving Highway 90 and Dogwood Drive with trees and flowers.

“The growth and beautification efforts help my business,” she said. She also said she appreciates living in a small town.

“I was born and raised in Milton. I love the city. It’s not too small and it meets our needs. It has variety. The people want to keep it thriving. Look at what’s happening with growth. People love it here and so do I,” she said.

Mariah Ard works on a silk arrangement for a customer at The Purple Tulip. She said she has worked at The Purple Tulip for 6 months.

Dalgleish said one of the main things she loves about being a business owner is the fact she can have her family around her.
“My mom and dad come in and help. Plus, I can bring my baby to work with me. I have the best of both worlds,” she said.

Their hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. and closed on Sundays. To contact The Purple Tulip you can visit their website at or call (850) 983-3600. You can also find the business on Facebook at
