Quittin’ Time

On my “Baywalker,”
gliding through Blackwater River,
civilization turns to solitude.

Nearby cypress knees,
intertwining with weathered trees,
reach back decades in time.

Haunted by shrieks from
laughing gulls,
the bow pierces the still waters.

Distant dolphins dance,
feasting on a breakfast
of mullet and ladyfish.

In this roux, I break out the fishing gear,
shunning my eyes from yet another brilliant sun,
and set my mind to wondering.
