It was 1974 when John Wood of Greenville, Florida drove over the Blackwater River Bridge and entered downtown Milton for the first time. Wood said, “I knew when I crossed the bridge this was the town I wanted to start my business.”

“Milton has grown a lot since 1974. We take pride in participating in the community and we want to be proactive,” said Wood.

This is the 3rd year in a row, said Ricky Downs, store manager, and the 5th time in 15 years. “We’re ranked #2 of over 350 Badcock Home Furniture and More stores nationally,” he said,  “Our customers stay with us. Our sales crew know the people of Milton. We have a great team.”

“We feel the city of Milton is extremely good to us and always has been,” said Downs, “It’s a great place to be whether you want to start a business, raise a family in a good school district or just find a great small town. People love Milton. It shows.”

Wood said he opened the Badcock location in 1975 on Caroline Street, across from the courthouse. “That building is no longer there,(It burned in the fire of 2009). It had 8,000 square feet. We moved to the current location on Glover Lane in 1979 and almost doubled the square footage. We’ve been successful all of this time due to our customers. Many have been with me since the beginning. They’re like family,” he said.

Ricky Downs, store manager

Downs agrees, “They’re honest, hardworking people.”

Wood said he was 20 years old when he came to Milton. “I didn’t know anyone. I grew up in Milton. It’s my hometown. People fed me from their table. Now, I want to give back. I try to help out whenever I can. We want to make an impact.” Both Wood and Downs agrees there’s a connection to the people in Milton like no other. “You can’t get that in larger cities or towns. This is a family affair. John is my step father and I work with both of my brothers here. I wouldn’t do anything other than what I’m doing now. I love what I do and I love Milton,” said Downs.
