Road resurfacing to continue; Outer Dr. and Sellers Dr. next on list

City street resurfacing continues with council in discussion of the next three groupings for approval. City Manager Brian Watkins said the three groups 3-5 include Outer Drive, Sellers Drive to begin; group 4 includes Berryhill Road and Savannah Drive; group 5 follows with Lakeshore Drive, Lexington Ave., Locklin Ave., Saratoga Ave., Ticonderoga Street and Youpon Streets.

Road resurfacing discussions began approximately two years ago when the gas tax passed. The council designated the finances from the tax be dedicated 100 percent to road resurfacing and improvements. The first group of streets to be resurfaced were Cedar Street; Cypress Street; Hickory Street; Lee Street; Orange Street and Pecan Street. Group 2 resurfaced Andromeda Drive; Polaris Drive; Starhill Drive and Vega Drive.

“There are 10 different groups (of city roads) ready for improvements and resurfacing and two that are already completed,” said Watkins. “The council approves more than one group at a time to get out in front and complete any repairs ahead of the resurfacing needed. This way any curb, gutter or utility repairs can be made beforehand and be ahead of resurfacing. We don’t want to cut and patch a newly resurfaced street.”

Watkins also said the city receives anywhere between $19 to $20k per month from the gas tax, strictly earmarked for road improvements and resurfacing. Watkins said some estimates, such as Berryhill and Savannah, are estimated at over $120k, which is why the city plans and budgets for such projects. The grand total for all 12 groups is estimated $1,427,302.

  1. I am glad to see Savannah drive on the list the east side is riddled with pot holes and it’s almost impossible between the potholes and speed bumps to go down the street. When will it be redone?
