The Milton City Council voted to name Cooper Plumbing as the Business of the Quarter, September 2018. Mayor Wesley Meiss said in the August Council Meeting this business is a pillar of the Milton community and he would like to honor the business and family.

The owner of Cooper Plumbing, Jackie Cooper passed away August 7th. He operated his business for 48 years.

“The Cooper family has been in Santa Rosa County for 8 generations,” said Vera Cooper, Jackie’s wife, “That’s remarkable if you think about it.”

Vera said the business will continue even in Jackie’s absence. She said the number of homes the business serviced would be “too many to count.”

Like many business owners, the Coopers started out small. Jackie began his career as a helper for his brother Gary in his early 20s. “He took his journeyman test 3 months later. He didn’t think he’d pass the first time but he did, only studying the day before,” said Vera, proudly. He worked for another company, learning the trade until he decided to give it a go on his own. She said he began following dump trucks around to learn where new homes were being built. Vera was working as a telephone operator for Southern Bell but began managing the office about 7 years into the new business. In 2001 they moved into a shop at 5863 Stewart Street; in 2004 Cooper Plumbing moved down the road into the current location at 5919 Stewart Street.

A giving person, Vera said, “Jackie made it a practice of giving back to the community whenever he could. He touched lives of many people over the years,” said Vera.

Married in 1965, Vera and Jackie have 3 children, 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
