What item reflects what is unique and important to Santa Rosa County?
Santa Rosa County in conjunction with the Florida Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services has launched the Santa Rosa County 2013 Time Capsule project in honor of Viva Florida 500.
Residents are asked to submit a nomination at each of the five library locations and vote on what items should be placed in the capsule to represent what future generations should know about our county.
Based on the number of votes received, one item selected at each library in Santa Rosa County will be placed into the time capsule. The time capsule will be sealed for 50 years.
Time capsule schedule:
- March – April: Nominate an item for placement in the time capsule at each Santa Rosa County Library.
- May – June: Vote for one of the top five nominations at your library branch.
- Wednesday, July 3: Winners are announced.
- Thursday, Sept. 19: Sealing ceremony takes place. Details announced at a later date.
The time capsule is just one of a host of programs to highlight Florida’s history at Santa Rosa County libraries.
Future Santa Rosa County VIVA Florida events include programs that feature Florida wildlife, flora, local history, and local author and artist exhibits. The first event is a presentation on Florida wildlife by the Florida Wildlife Commission on April 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the Milton Library.
Viva Florida 500 is a statewide initiative led by the Florida Department of State, under the leadership of Governor Rick Scott, to highlight the 500th anniversary in 2013 of the arrival of Juan Ponce de Leὀn to La Florida in 1513.
While Florida’s history dates back more than 12,000 years with the American Indians, Spain’s claim in 1513 began a new era.
In 2013 Florida will mark 500 years of history and diverse cultural heritage – a claim no other state can make – and the place where the world’s cultures began to unite and transform into the great nation we know today as the United States of America.
Viva Florida 500 will take place year-round in 2013 and its many partners are planning more than 150 events statewide.
The goal is to promote 500 years of Florida’s history, its people, places and cultural achievements and this important milestone in American and Florida history. Learn more by visiting www.fla500.com and www.vivaflorida.org.
