Each year the nation’s fire services observe National Fire Prevention Week on the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire (October 10, 1871). This offers an opportunity for fire departments throughout the country to promote fire prevention and fire safety.
In conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, October 7– 13, the City of Milton Fire Department hosted their third annual “Fire Prevention Week Open House” on Saturday, October 12, at their Fire Station on Stewart Street.
This very popular event featured tours of the fire station and fire apparatus, fire safety information, displays of fire safety equipment, a fire safety puppet show, activities for children and lots of fun for the whole family.
Several area agencies partnered with the fire department to support the event, including the Milton Police Department, Lifeguard Ambulance Service, Fire & Emergency Services Gulf Coast (Navy Fire) Station 1 aboard NAS Whiting Field, Midway Fire Rescue District, Santa Rosa
Emergency Management, Pace CERT, Santa Rosa Medical Center, Northwest Florida Blood Center, Florida Forest Service and the Blinded Veterans Association.
“This is our opportunity to promote fire safety and show off what our community offers in the way of emergency response,” said Milton Fire Chief John E. Reble.
Free hot dogs, popcorn and drinks were available, along with free samples from Firehouse Subs, Krystal, Chick-fil-a and Texas Roadhouse. The following local businesses also generously
A special effort was made to promote this event among local elementary schools. A video announcement was filmed by members of the fire department and distributed on in-school ITV systems.
