The well known family business, Tops Appliance, located at 6712 Caroline Street in Milton, will be open 60 years in March, said owner Barry White. Inheriting the business from his father, Clayton White, the late city councilman who passed in 2014, White said he couldn’t see himself doing anything else. “I wanted to stay in my hometown and raise my family here.”

Tops Appliances is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. until noon. The showroom is located at 6712 Caroline Street in downtown Milton. For more information call 850-623-3371 or visit the website at http://topsappliance.net and like them on Facebook.

“I walked here from Berryhill School (now the administration building on Berryhill Street) when I was a boy. Mom was here working. I don’t think a child could do that now,” he said. White has good memories of his parents working the business in his hometown. “Back then, Dad had televisions in the front windows. At the end of the day, he would leave them turned on with the volume up. People would stand in the parking lot, watching television,” he said. “Products used to be delivered by train and unloaded on Henry Street. Now, most products are ordered today and here tomorrow.”

He said though things are changing in the city, a lot is still the same. “Still, our long time customers are still shopping with us and their children are coming to the store to buy their appliances. We stay competitive with our products and pricing,” he said.

For example, White said Tops Appliances carries Speed Queen washers and dryers that can only be purchased at independent businesses along with Amana, Estate, Frigidaire, GE Appliances, Hotpoint, Maytag, and Samsung.  They also carry Kamado Joe grills and a large selection of all home appliances with parts and service.

What’s the future of Tops Appliances? White said he can foresee a brisk business to coincide with Milton’s growth. “We’ll maintain a healthy business as the city grows. We have quality employees and great customer service in our hometown.”
